‘The King’s Speech’ Conquers The Oscars

Academy picks royal film for its Best Picture, Director and Actor honors.

Director Tom Hooper gave moms watching the 83rd Academy Awards a reason to love his film, and the Oscars gave “The King’s Speech” four statues by the end of the night, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

“The moral of this story is: Listen to your mother,” Hooper told the audience at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre when he accepted his directing prize. The first-time winner and nominee credited his mother for discovering the script, which also won in its category for writer David Seidler.

Seidler’s tale, based on King George VI’s struggle to overcome a stuttering problem and lead Britain through World War II, entered the night with a royal recipe of previously nominated talent, historical drama and personal strife. When the ballots were finally counted, the classic formula won out, and Hooper, Seidler and star Colin Firth earned a few coveted words to put in front of their names for the rest of their careers: Oscar winner.

Check out backstage photos of the big Oscar winners.

“I have a feeling my career’s just peaked,” Firth quipped during his acceptance speech. The excitement, however, wasn’t enough for him to get funky in front of the crowd. “I’m afraid I have to warn you that I’m experiencing stirrings somewhere in the upper abdominals,” he revealed before excusing himself to go backstage and indulge his desire to dance.

“The King’s Speech” may not have swept its nomination categories, with Geoffrey Rush losing out to Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor and Helena Bonham Carter coming up short against Melissa Leo in “The Fighter” for Best Supporting Actress. Likewise, it failed to take home awards in six other categories where it was nominated. But failing to earn Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography won’t be the movie’s legacy.

“The Social Network” edged out the Oscar night’s biggest winner for Best Film Editing and Best Music, and “The Fighter” earning the first statue of the night ensured that the Oscars would be shared this year.

Nevertheless, of the three films, “The King’s Speech” will have the most enviable assortment of laurels on its DVD cover when it lands on store shelves.

Stick with MTV News on Oscar night and beyond for red-carpet fashion coverage, analysis of the winners, plus interviews, photos and more from your favorite Hollywood stars!

Lady Gaga Confirms There Are Two ‘Born This Way’ Videos

Proceeds from ‘stripped-down’ clip and song will go to ‘anti-bully charity,’ she tells Gayle King.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga sat down with Oprah Winfrey’s bestie, Gayle King, to discuss her forthcoming Nick Knight-directed videos for her chart-topping single “Born This Way,” from her May album of the same name.

“I do have some exciting news about the new single. I’ve been so excited about [the fans'] reaction and seeing the fans be so excited during the show every time we play ‘Born This Way,’ it’s been really amazing,” she told King. “I’ve made two music videos for the song.”

Gaga then went on to confirm that portions of the proceeds from the sale of the “stripped-down” version of the song, which will get its own video (further details about that clip were not known at press time), will go to charity. “So there’s one that’s coming out on Monday,” she explained. “But then I’m actually putting together another video, which is a more stripped-down version of the song that will be released on iTunes and also released as an audio file. A portion of the money raised selling the song is actually going to go towards an anti-bully charity.”

Mum has been the word on what the videos will actually be like. Though Gaga, in a recent radio interview, noted that the visual is about “the birth of a new race within the race of humanity. The birth of a new race that doesn’t bear any prejudices. I think the most important thing is that I continue to grow, and I knew when I put [out] ‘BTW’ it would be a transitional moment, because it doesn’t sound like [my previous singles].”

What are you expecting from the “Born This Way” videos? Let us know in the comments!

Lil Wayne Producer Bangladesh Plans Future Collaborations With Ke$ha

‘It gives her a whole new look and it shows how creative I am,’ Grammy-nominated producer says of Cannibal singer.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Producer Bangladesh‘s biggest break came when he powered Lil Wayne‘s “A Milli.” Then he upped the ante on Weezy’s recent release “6 Foot 7 Foot.” So, what does the Grammy-nominated beatsmith have in store for the new year? More of the same, actually.

Bangladesh hopes to continue his genre-bending ways, whether it’s lending rock-leaning sensibilities to Lil Wayne or injecting a pop star’s work with edgy hip-hop drums. He and Dr. Luke (Britney Spears, Pink, Katy Perry) recently worked together on Ke$ha’s “Sleazy,” from her Cannibal LP.

“I met Luke through a mutual friend, so it was like me walking into a stranger’s house,” Bangladesh told MTV News. “I really didn’t know what to expect. But it was all love. It was kind of like the roles were reversed, like I was the biggest producer and he just had a couple of hits. Once I saw how he felt about me, I was like man, I might be the truth. [He laughs.]”

After hitting it off, they joined forces for “Sleazy,” the first of many collaborations Bangladesh is shooting for with the “Tik Tok” star.

“That’s a good look, because it gives her a whole new look and it shows how creative I am,” he explained. “It shows how music is changing. And it shows that I’m kind of the changer behind it. The leader. I’m trying to mix the different genres where it’s still convincing, like, I believe them doing this.”

New ‘Never Say Never’ Clip Shows Justin Bieber Singing With Fan

The ‘Director’s Fan Cut’ teaser captures the teen sensation performing an acoustic version of ‘Baby’ with a young girl.
By Eric Ditzian

Earlier this week, “Never Say Never” director Jon Chu promised MTV News that his new “Director’s Fan Cut” of Justin Bieber’s 3-D flick would deliver 40 minutes of fresh footage, including different songs (such as “Favorite Girl”), some more shirtless shots of the teen singer (“Maybe some abs!”) and extra scenes of him interacting with fans.

With the recut movie hitting theaters on Friday (February 25), Paramount Pictures has released a clip showing just that: the Biebs hanging out with some of his young fanatical followers. The 71-second promo shows Bieber — pre-haircut, of course — at an intimate gathering in Phoenix. While the pop star gives an acoustic performance on a small stage, his fans beg him to play “Baby,” but he jokes, “I don’t know that song.”

He then declares to a very young fan, “I’ll only sing ‘Baby’ if you come up here and sing it with me.” Cue the cuteness. The girl sits on his lap and together they belt out the hit single.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Bieber show off an easy, breezy way with his youngest fans. Last year, he popped up on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to surprise a 3-year-old Belieber named Cody who’d become an Internet sensation after her sister posted a video of her crying over the teen heartthrob on YouTube. As he tweeted later, “Makin faces with Cody!”

The re-released “Never Say Never” represents an effort both to goose box-office receipts three weeks after the film’s initial opening and to feed the Beliebers’ seemingly insatiable appetite for anything and everything connected to the star.

“We originally had a two-and-a-half-hour version of the movie, which we obviously couldn’t release,” Chu explained to us. “So we started to think about putting stuff back in that didn’t have to do with our story but that we knew people would love.”

Are you planning to go see the “Director’s Fan Cut” of “Never Say Never”? Let us know in the comments.

Usher’s ‘OMG’ ‘ ‘Kills It Every Night,’ Says Tourmate Miguel

‘There’s so much anticipation for this song when he comes out,’ Miguel says of MTV News’ Song of the Year.
By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker

MTV News just named Usher’s “OMG” the #1 song of 2010, and clearly we’re not alone in our admiration. But what is it like to watch it performed night after night? Miguel, who is currently opening for Usher’s OMG Tour gave us a little insight.

“There’s so much anticipation for this song when he comes out, and he really gives the fans what they want,” Miguel laughs. “He kills it every night.”

Before his latest string of hits, Usher was out of the spotlight for a period of time in 2009, when he was dealing with personal issues including a divorce. Miguel finds his 2010 comeback inspiring.

“There was a period of time, when a lot of people didn’t believe in Usher and thought he was finished … just kind of going to ride off into the sunset and disappear,” the up-and-coming singer noted.

With the release of Raymond vs. Raymond and its extended, companion EP, Versus, in 2010, Usher proved the skeptics wrong with chart-toppers including “OMG” and “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love.”

“He’s such a tremendous example of perseverance and determination,” Miguel beamed. “I was there throughout this album, so I’ve seen the adversity that he’s had to overcome perception-wise.”

MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 have all been counted down. But the fun isn’t over yet: We still want to see your picks in the comments below!

Rhymefest Explains How Hip-Hop Career Helps Him In Politics

Kanye West protégé made it to an April runoff election for Chicago City Council.
By Brian Jacks

Move over, Barack Obama and Rahm Emanuel, there’s a new face in Chicago politics. And it’s probably not who you’d expect.

Rapper Che “Rhymefest” Smith, the Kanye West protégé whose collaboration on “Jesus Walks” earned the pair a Grammy in 2004, is knee-deep in a hotly contested race for the Chicago City Council. The artist received 20 percent of Tuesday’s vote against incumbent Willie Cochran, forcing a runoff election for the alderman seat representing the city’s 20th Ward.

A lifelong Chicago resident who grew up with West on the city’s troubled South Side, ‘Fest seems an unlikely political candidate, but the artist contends his musical career outside the political system makes him an ideal choice to be a councilman.

“We could talk on a hip-hop level and we can talk on a community level,” Smith told MTV News. “On a hip-hop level, we rappers are always talking about ‘hood credibility; we’re more ‘hood than the next artist is, but what are we really doing to make our community safer, to make people be able to have employment in our communities? We’re living under tyrannical conditions. So as an artist, what can I do more than a song-and-dance for the community that has bought my records?”

The artist pointed to such factors as high unemployment and prison recidivism as key issues in his campaign, stating that his experience in the music industry has given him the skills necessary not only to help legislate, but to directly improve the lives of the citizens in his community.

“I think the great thing about the position I’m running for in city council is, unlike a president or a senator, we’re on the ground,” he said. “We’re in the community. We get to [be] hands-on with the people every day. And I think that’s where it starts. … So what would I do as an advocate and legislator for the community? I’d begin with entrepreneur programs. As a brand — Rhymefest — and being in the industry, I can teach people how to market and promote and start their own businesses.”

Like politicians who bring in celebrity donors to get out the vote, Smith has been able to rely on his own stable of high-profile names to help with his campaign. And he’s issuing a call for other hip-hop notables to join his cause.

“[Kanye] helped with his generous donation,” Smith said. “He helped to fund my whole field operation on Election Day. Lupe Fiasco helped to pay for hundreds of turkeys where we went door-to-door for Thanksgiving Day. Brother Ali stepped up. [But] Talib Kweli, Common: I need you. I’m asking for the so-called conscious, positive rappers to join me, to help us resurrect all our communities, starting with the 20th Ward in Chicago. I put down the mic to help save a community, and I need the positive rappers to come out too.”

Rhymefest’s burgeoning political career will face its strongest test when the runoff election is held April 5. But whatever happens, the artist will continue to push for change within his community. “One of the problems that’s plaguing America is the individualism attitude,” he said. “We really have to step up and be a village again.”

What do you think of Rhymefest’s political career? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, ‘Never Say Never’ star said in 2009.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Brian Phares/MTV News

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.

“My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I’d never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people,” he recalled.

“And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, ‘Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?’ The politest possible way he could say no, he did. … I took the hint. I didn’t get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session.”

But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. “He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, ‘I should have let this kid sing,’ and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me.”

As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.

“As far as Usher being my mentor, he’s definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important,” he explained.

“There’s a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life.”

On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never – The Remixes Tops Billboard Chart

In a week that saw plenty of post-Grammy sales bumps, it’s Bieber who reigns supreme.
By James Montgomery

In a week in which the post-Grammy sales boom finally took hold, sending several long-dormant albums rocketing back up the charts, it was the kid who got shut out at the big show who ended up topping the charts.

Justin Bieber‘s Never Say Never – The Remixes debuts at #1 on next week’s Billboard top 200 albums chart, giving the pop star the second chart-topping bow of his young career. The album sold more than 161,000 copies, easily surpassing Mumford & Sons‘ breakout Sigh No More, which benefited from the group’s Grammy-night performance with Bob Dylan (and the Avett Brothers), selling nearly 133,000 copies — a 169 percent increase in sales from the previous week — to hold steady at #2.

Former chart champ the Now 37 compilation lands at #3, with sales of nearly 95,000 copies, and Lady Antebellum — who not only performed at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, but took home the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year — posted a 205 percent sales jump, selling more than 85,000 copies to snag the #4 spot.

Grammy winner and performer Bruno MarsDoo-Wops & Hooligans sold nearly 61,000 copies (a 55 percent burst in sales) to come in at #5, followed by a host of other Grammy beneficiaries: Eminem‘s Recovery at #6 (nearly 61,000 copies sold), the 2011 Grammy Nominees compilation (#7, nearly 56,000 copies sold), Bieber’s My World, 2.0 (#8, more than 54,000 copies), and Nicki Minaj‘s Pink Friday (#9, nearly 46,000 copies). Rihanna‘s Loud rounds out the top 10, with sales of more than 45,000 copies sold.

That Grammy bump continues outside the top 10 too, starting with Katy Perry‘s Teenage Dream, which, thanks to her Grammy performance, jumped 30 percent in sales, moving nearly 42,000 units to land at #11. Surprise Album of the Year winners Arcade Fire‘s The Suburbs posted a 238 percent sales jump to come in at #12, selling more than 40,000 copies … and moving past the 500,000 mark in total sales as a result.

Other winners and performers who leapt up the charts include Florence and the Machine, whose Lungs moved from #28 to #19; Cee Lo Green‘s The Lady Killer (from #53 to #22); Lady Gaga‘s The Fame (from #35 to #23); and the Black KeysBrothers, which posted a 25 percent sales jump to grab the #24 spot.

Aside from Bieber’s Never Say Never, other notable Billboard debuts include Bright EyesThe People’s Key, which opened at #12 with sales of nearly 41,000 copies, Hillsong United‘s Aftermath (#17, with sales of more than 27,000 copies), Ginuwine‘s Elgin (#30, with sales of more than 19,000 copies), and PJ Harvey‘s Let England Shake, which bows at #32 with sales of nearly 18,000.

Oscar Preview: Can ‘King’s Speech’ Be Dethroned?

The period drama seems poised to take the Best Picture crown once promised to ‘The Social Network.’
By Eric Ditzian

Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech”
Photo: Weinstein Company

If the 83rd Academy Awards had been held a month ago, shortly after the critics groups had doled out their prizes and the final glasses of champagne had been drained at the Golden Globes, “The Social Network” would almost certainly have nabbed Oscar’s Best Picture statue. After all, David Fincher’s film about the salacious founding of Facebook hardly encountered a critics group it didn’t woo and win over, before going on to earn four Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Drama. What could possibly stand between “Social Network” and the Academy’s top honor?

As it turns out, another month. And another biopic, this one telling a story that begins some 80 years ago and resembling a far more traditional Oscar film than Fincher’s exploration of youth and digital beauty. “The King’s Speech” bounced back from its Globe defeats (it nabbed just one of seven nominations, with Colin Firth taking top dramatic actor) and secured important wins from the Producers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild.

So much for creating a big tent with the inclusion of 10 Best Picture nominees. Like last year, we find ourselves watching a two-horse race that, at this point, might not be all that close. Kudos to “Toy Story 3,” “Winter’s Bone” and “Inception,” but their nominations are kind of the equivalent of pity invites to a kid’s birthday party: Sure, the birthday boy was forced to request the pleasure of your company, but he’s not going to pretend you’re anything more than a seat-filler. Our man Oscar holds the most exclusive birthday party in Hollywood, and its voters like it that way.

What’s interesting this year is the nature of the two-horse race. In 2010, it came down to a decision between a populist fave in “Avatar” that made a gazillion dollars at the box office and a critics’ darling in “The Hurt Locker” that maybe six people saw in the theater. Both “Social Network” and “King’s Speech,” meanwhile, have almost identical box-office grosses and high-90s ratings at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator. The difference between the two is that “King’s Speech” is the kind of film that could have been an Oscar nominee a decade ago — or a half-century ago — whereas “Social Network,” in everything from story line to subtext to soundtrack, is directly plugged into 2011.

That’s not to suggest “King’s Speech” is some musty relic of yesteryear, nor that contemporary relevancy is a requirement for Oscar glory. The key, rather, is that the best film should win. And if you ask us, the finest film of the year is “Social Network.” But as in so many years past — from how “Gladiator” bested “Traffic” to the way “Shakespeare in Love” beat out, well, geez, take your pick! — the best film of the year doesn’t always receive that Oscar honor.

We can talk about momentum, we can indentify vital precursor wins, we can cite all manner of historical facts and we can lament fuddy-duddy voters. None of it seems to matter. On Sunday night, it appears, a very good film but hardly the year’s best will win Best Picture. Let’s offer our early congratulations to “The King’s Speech.”

Which Oscar contender should take Best Picture? Share your pick in the comments!

Will it be a regal evening for “The King’s Speech”? Can “The Social Network” dial up Oscar gold? Don’t miss MTV News’ “2011 Oscars Live” at 6 p.m. Sunday, February 27, when we’ll be chatting with your favorite Hollywood stars live from the red carpet on MTVNews.com, and stick with us all Oscar night for winners, interviews, photos and more!

Ke$ha Pokes Fun At Disney In New Funny Or Die Clip

Pop singer plays a dirty Disney princess in online parody.
By Jocelyn Vena

Ke$ha in Funny or Die’s “Disney’s Princess Ke$ha” video
Photo: Funny Or Die

Ever wonder what it would be like if Disney gave Ke$ha her very own movie? Well wonder no more, since the folks over at Funny or Die have dreamed up a new Ke$ha-starring satire, “Disney’s Princess Ke$ha.”

The clip opens with Ke$ha in a castle bedroom addressing her animated pals, complaining about her alarm clock waking her up. “Oh that clock. What a killjoy,” she says as she stares out of her window in the castle tower. Just as she begins singing a very Disney melody, she proclaims it “gross” and says “f— it,” before kicking off a signature Ke$ha-style tune, complete with her rap-sing style and club-ready beat.

“Time to get the day going/ Dress it up to the nines/ Yo, critter crew/ Make Princess Ke$ha look fine,” she sings. “Add a little pinch of magic from my fairy-tale life and off we go.” Then she goes into the chorus: “I’m getting ready so nice / I’m getting customized.”

The pop star is later catapulted into the real world. In an alley, she meets up with an animated rat, a pumpkin and a cross-dressing hobo fairy godmother. The rat and pumpkin are transformed into a shopping cart and a man who take off with Ke$ha.

This is the singer’s second appearance on the site. Last November she appeared in a clip where she jokingly explained “The Story of the $.”

“I used to be Kesha with an S, instead of a dollar sign, and then one year I had my birthday party at Shakey’s Pizza,” she said in the clip. “On the sign, the big sign where they write ‘Happy birthday,’ they replaced the S with a dollar sign. It ruined my life. I wanted to be a CPA, but you know who H&R Block doesn’t hire? People with dollar signs in their name. I pretty much had to be a pop star.”

What do you think of Ke$ha’s latest Funny or Die video? Tell us in the comments!

‘Drive Angry’ Stars Discuss Film’s Most Outrageous Moments

‘I’m still kind of amazed that they let me drink beer out of somebody’s skull,’ Nicolas Cage marvels to MTV News.
By Kara Warner

Amber Heard
Photo: MTV News

If the trailers haven’t already sold the fact that “Drive Angry” is outrageous, in every sense of the word, allow the cast of the film — Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, Billy Burke and William Fichtner — to expand on the subject, particularly the scenes they thought would be left on the cutting-room floor.

“I’m still kind of amazed that they let me drink beer out of somebody’s skull,” Cage admitted to MTV News recently of his character’s most over-the-top antics. “That that’s still in the movie, and it’s a credit to [director] Patrick Lussier that he had the guts to go in the most far-out places.”

“Only in our movie, in the world of ‘Drive Angry,’ ” Heard said.

“I wanted it to look good, like, ‘My cup runneth over,’ ” Cage explained of the big moment. “I wanted the beer to come sploshing out of the eye sockets.”

Burke, who plays a very disturbed and psychotic cult leader hell-bent on infant sacrifice in the film, said he figured that one of the film’s climactic scenes would receive a less intensely violent edit.

“I thought that we would probably change sacrificing a baby to maybe a lamb or something like that,” Burke said. “I didn’t think that we’d actually go forward with wanting to kill a baby, but we did, and that’s the kind of movie this is. So if you can’t take that, for the fun and spirit in which it’s intended, then you shouldn’t go see this movie,” he advised.

For scene-stealer Fichtner, who plays the mysterious character the Accountant, he was most surprised that a very racy/violent love scene made the cut.

“There was one scene in the movie, we all know which one I’m talking about [a 'creative' sex scene in which Cage engages in a gunfight with a naked woman still on top of him] where I thought, ‘Wow, that’s interesting,’ ” he said. “That’s a challenge.”

In addition to the outrageousness of wrapping your head around what happens in that scene, Fichtner said he has great respect for the actors and stunt coordinators who made it happen.

“Patrick [Lussier] did an amazing job and so did Charlotte [Ross] and Nic,” he said. “It’s much more than just a sex scene.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Drive Angry.”

MSNBC Commentator Rachael Maddow Gives Props to Florida Death Metal

When political commentators mention extreme metal on the air it’s usually in reference to something tragic like a school shooting, church burning or suicide pact. But when MSNBC liberal correspondent Rachael Maddow invoked the names of Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under, Obituary, Death and Deicide it was mostly to take a stab at Republicans, not [...]

Justin Bieber’s Haircut: Fans Weigh In!

While many Beliebers are gushing over his ‘sexy,’ ‘older’ cut, others tell MTV News they miss his signature ‘swoop.’
By Jocelyn Vena

This week Justin Bieber made headlines thanks to a new haircut. The Biebs had his famous swooping bangs cut into a shorter, cropped look, and he told talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres he doesn’t “really care” what people have to say about his ‘do.

But his fans have been weighing in on the new hairstyle anyway, and many of them approve of the haircut.

“I really like it and it actually makes him look older!!!! And for all u down there hating on Bieber well if it was Angelina Jolie I’m sure you’d have something to say so don’t hate ’cause he’s sexy and he ain’t even legal yet,” Amanda wrote on MTV.com.

Lilia added, “AAh, he looks better with the new hair! Suits him!”

Beliebers have been debating the star’s latest look since he debuted it earlier this week. Coote noted on our site that Bieber is much more than a head of hair. “I think he [looks] sexy … i don’t love him for his hair… i love him because he is sweet, cute and perfect,” Coote wrote.

MTV News also took to the streets of New York City to see whether people preferred the “Never Say Never” star’s old look or the new one.

“I like it, I think it looks good on him,” Catherine said of Bieber’s longtime haircut. She added about the brand-new cut: “I like it better than the other one, but I think that a lot of his fans liked the [old] one. … Everyone loves him for his hair and now he doesn’t have it anymore.”

Meanwhile, Tiffany loved the original but was blown away by the new version. “I think it’s very Bieberish, I like that long swoop. It definitely works for him,” Tiffany said before we showed her the updated look. “Oh my god! It’s such a transformation! I just love it! He looks so much older!”

“It’s just beautiful,” Christina explained of the old ‘do. “I liked him with his longer hair better. That’s just who he was discovered as.”

“He looks a little geeky,” Sofia said of his famous original hairdo. “It’s much better,” she said of the cropped cut. “He doesn’t look like my brother anymore. He looks five years older. He’s so cute.”

Which do you prefer: Bieber’s long locks or his cropped cut? Tell us in the comments!

‘Never Say Never’ Director Wanted To Film Justin Bieber Haircut

‘I would have brought a 3-D camera there,’ Jon Chu tells MTV News of missing out on teen star’s historic barber trip.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian

There are few celebrities these days that can set the news wires and Internets on fire by engaging in basic, everyday tasks. Lady Gaga, Robert Pattinson, Kim Kardashian and, of course, Justin Bieber, are among the few whose every move is cause for Twitter trends and celebrations.

Case in point, Bieber’s haircut. A photo of the 16-year-old’s newly shorn locks appeared on TMZ on Monday, along with news that the clippings will be given to charity to raise money for various causes, including animal rights.

Naturally, Bieber’s famously fluffy hair swoop has been the subject of innumerable news stories and tweets, so when MTV News checked in with his “Never Say Never” director Jon Chu on Tuesday (February 22), we had to bring up the very popular subject of Biebs’ new haircut. Chu’s only complaint was that Bieber didn’t let him know about the momentous occasion.

“I would have brought a 3-D camera there,” said Chu, who recently announced the release of a special “Director’s Fan Cut” of the film. “I would have shot it for ['Never Say Never'] 3.0.”

Chu went on to say that he won’t miss the shaggy flip and heartily approves of Bieber’s shorter ‘do.

“Two thumbs-up for the haircut, for sure. He’s wanted it for a long time,” Chu told us. “I’m just happy for him because he’s been holding on. He’s like, ‘I need to get the haircut, I want to get rid of it!’ But he has his hair flip which he can’t get rid of, but now it’s R.I.P. hair flip.”

We then pointed out that “R.I.P. hair flip” sounded like a perfect Bieber-related Twitter trending topic, and Chu informed us that we were way behind.

“It is a Twitter trending topic!” he said with a chuckle. “At least it was yesterday, last night.”

What do you think of Justin Bieber’s new hair? Tell us in the comments!

Katy Perry Praises Beyonce In Elle

‘I think diva is a great and powerful word in the sense of what Beyoncé makes it,’ the pop star says in the magazine’s cover story.
By Jocelyn Vena

Katy Perry not only glams up for the new issue of Elle, but she also gets real. The singer — who is gearing up for a big performance on this Sunday’s Grammy Awards — dishes on diva behavior, discusses her personal life and even reveals how much she weighs in the fashion magazine’s latest cover story.

“I feel like I’m at a point in my life right now where I could potentially stick around,” Perry says about her outlook on being a pop star. “I don’t feel like a diva, but I think diva is a great and powerful word in the sense of what Beyoncé makes it. And maybe I can’t be Beyoncé, but maybe I can be Cyndi Lauper. I mean be like her, not be her. That would just be weird.”

The singer also admits to having some ambitions outside of the entertainment world. “I think some people will die on the stage, and I’m not so sure I want to do that. Like, I want to have kids!” she explains. “I’m totally fine with saying that. I think some people are scared because they’re worried it’s going to ruin their career, but I want to live a full life.”

That full life, these days, includes her hubby, Russell Brand, who she says is her perfect better half. “Everything clicked really fast. We kind of instantly got past all the surfacey stuff. And ever since then, there hasn’t been a dull moment,” she says. “We both needed balance, and we give that to each other. It wasn’t about me taming him, which is what everyone always says — it was about timing.”

Perry doesn’t hold back at all, revealing details about her weight that very few celebrities seem willing to share with the world. “I was shaped like a square at one time. I was! I’m generally around 130 pounds, which is totally fine for me,” she confesses. “But when I was a kid, I was the same height and weighed more like 145. And I had enormous boobs that I didn’t know what to do with, so I wore minimizers, which were not cute. Those thick-ass straps! I got made fun of for the over-the-shoulder boulder holder … and all I wanted was to look like Kate Moss. Little did I know … that these things would come in handy someday.”

Dr. Dre’s ‘I Need A Doctor’ Insiders To Appear On MTV.com Tonight!

Singer Skylar Grey and producer Alex Da Kid will chat with Sway on ‘RapFix Live’ about Eminem-assisted clip at 6 p.m.
By MTV News staff

Dr. Dre

Dr. Dre is officially back. The legendary West Coast hip-hop producer premiered the video for his latest single, “I Need a Doctor,” on Thursday (February 24), and MTV News’ “RapFix Live” will break down the clip at 6 p.m.

The song is the comeback number from Dr. Dre’s Detox, following his buzz single “Kush” featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon. On “I Need a Doctor,” Dre and Eminem trade endearing verses about their bond over the Alex Da Kid (B.o.B, Nicki Minaj, Lupe Fiasco) production. The pair recently performed the number live for the first time at the Grammy Awards.

Log on to MTV.com for “RapFix Live Dr. Dre’s ‘I Need a Doctor’ Video Premiere” hosted by MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway. Alex Da Kid and Skylar Grey, who sings the track’s chorus, will join Sway via Skype to discuss the song and video.

“That was amazing,” the producer told MTV News last year about working with Dre on Detox. “He’s one of my favorite producers of all time. Everybody knows how much of a perfectionist he is: He’s been working on his album for 11 years. For him to bring me in, trust me, not micro-manage me, and let me bring what I do to the table, I can’t even describe how that makes me feel.

“I think it’s gonna be huge,” he added “It’s just my opinion, but it’s one of my favorite songs that I did and just what it means for hip-hop.”

Don’t miss “RapFix Live: Dr. Dre’s ‘I Need a Doctor’ Video Premiere” with Skylar Grey and Alex Da Kid at 6 p.m. tonight on MTV.com.

What better way to celebrate Wendy O. Williams’ 61st birthday on May 28 (if she hadn’t blown her head off at age 48) than with a cute, scantily clad bobblehead doll.

Grammy 2011 Snubs Include Adam Lambert, Ke$ha, Big Boi, Rihanna

While Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber were both nominated, they didn’t get as much love as some expected.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images

You hear it all the time: “I’m just thankful to be nominated.” It’s the gracious and polite thing to say, and artists who lose out on major awards always feel compelled to offer it up.

But what if you never even get nominated?

Every year, there are head-slapping omissions from the roster of nominees at the big awards-fests (Christopher Nolan at the Oscars, anyone?), and this year’s 53rd annual Grammy Awards (which take place February 13) are no exception.

In the night’s biggest category, Album of the Year, there was plenty of griping from critics about the inclusion of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, which many considered too lightweight for the night’s top prize. But there was also a bit of talk about Justin Bieber’s smash My World 2.0 not making it into the mix in the major categories, even if Bieber can lick his wounds with his Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album love.

Though the rules about the Best New Artist category have since been changed to avoid such a problem in the future, Lady Gaga has been the victim of Grammy snubs before. She earned six nominations this year, including coveted Album of the Year for The Fame Monster, but it was mystifying that her huge hit, “Bad Romance,” didn’t get any Record or Song of the Year nominations.

What gives?

“They want her for ratings, but I think the Grammys are still a bit freaked out by Gaga,” said Entertainment Weekly music writer Leah Greenblatt. “There were so many shenanigans about her not being nominated for Best New Artist that I think the Grammys got shamed over that. It’s possible they would try to make it up to her by showering her with nominations and I could see her win in major categories [in the future], but I think they’re not quite ready for her.” That could, of course, change next year when Gaga’s Born This Way is in the running.

Another diva used to serious Grammy love, Alicia Keys, was totally shut out for her The Element of Freedom album. “It’s interesting that Alicia Keys got nothing,” she said. “Her and John Mayer are practically on the ballots every year whether they qualify for eligibility or not. And I think ‘Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart’ was one of the year’s best singles.” And reclusive Grammy bait Sade got a pair of notices for her singles “Soldier of Love” and “Babyfather” in the R&B categories but no chance at any of the big prizes. Greenblatt said she was surprised by both snubs, especially since Sade’s Soldier of Love album was one of the top sellers of 2010 and because the enigmatic singer had been away for nearly a decade and came back in fine, mature form, the kind of story the Grammys love to honor.

There were some eyebrows raised over the single nomination for “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert, who had a solid and creatively rich hit album with his debut, For Your Entertainment, but just a single nod for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Whataya Want From Me.”

With Perry strutting into a number of top categories thanks to her light-as-air pop confections, it was a wonder that another pop tart with huge digital sales and big chart hits (things the Recording Academy likes to see), Ke$ha, was completely shut out of the game. Greenblatt thought the Lambert dis might fall into the same Gaga territory, with the Academy being a bit freaked out by the singer’s out-and-proud persona and over-the-top antics, but when it comes to Ke$ha, she said it’s probably a different story. “She had a huge impact, but I think the Grammys think she might go away, and they’ve chosen not to legitimize her,” she speculated.

Speaking of big sales, quite a few people commented on the fact that Train’s smash “Hey, Soul Sister,” the best-selling single of 2010, got just one notice for a little-heard live version in the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group category.

A couple of well-respected hip-hop acts were also conspicuously absent from the nominations list, including Outkast’s Big Boi, whose acclaimed Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty was left out of the Best Rap Album category, along with Rick Ross, whose Teflon Don got no love. “Rick Ross is the kind of artist made to be ignored by the Grammys,” Greenblatt said. “He has a sensibility the Grammys will almost never come around to, no matter how beloved he is by rap fans.”

But given that she thought Chico Dusty was one of the best albums of 2010, Greenblatt was stunned by the freeze-out of Big Boi, who has been showered with Grammy love in the past. “It’s such an achievement, a fully realized album that feels like a real tapestry, a headphones album from someone whose skills are so singular … [from] one of the most iconic and Grammy-approved hip-hop acts of all time.”

Rihanna’s Rated R was also eligible but got stiffed in the major categories, landing just a Best Dance Recording nod for “Only Girl (In the World)” for her single from last year’s Loud and a number of notices for her work on Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie.” And if you thought Kanye West got ripped off when My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy got blanked, don’t worry: It wasn’t eligible this year but is in the hunt for next year.

The one omission that seemed to make sense was the two small nominations for the kids from “Glee,” who are up for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for their cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Glee: Vol. 1. Though they set cash registers ringing like crazy, it’s no wonder that actors singing covers didn’t garner attention at a show that ostensibly awards creativity. And no one seemed too shocked that Christina Aguilera’s poorly received Bionic was ignored.

Who do you think got stiffed by the Grammys? Share your top snubs in the comments.

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, ‘Never Say Never’ star said in 2009.

Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash Light Up Super Bowl XLV Halftime Show

Foursome is joined by special guests and tons of lights for smash-hit medley.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

The Black Eyed Peas promised a party at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday (February 6), and the pop supernovas definitely delivered, with a performance teeming with lights, dancers and surprise appearances from celebrity pals.

Following a Chatter.com commercial that showed animated versions of the Peas showing off their social-media skills, the group kicked things off with their 2009 smash “I Gotta Feeling,” descending from the ceiling on illuminated platforms onto a stage surrounded by a cluster of dancers clad in white bodysuits. The foursome led the team of fist-pumping troops in “Tron”-like getups, with Taboo sporting an outfit covered in flashing lights, will.i.am rocking a shiny hairpiece, Apl.de.ap wearing huge bright studs and Fergie vamping it up in bling-laden shoulder pads.

When the speaker-busting bass of “Boom Boom Pow” dropped, the dancers dispersed across the field to create arrow-shaped formations as the glow-in-the-dark lights on their suits illuminated the stadium. Then rumored surprise guest Slash of Guns N’ Roses rose from below the stage for a “Sweet Child O’ Mine” duet with Fergie. The GNR great rocked a finger-searing solo in a studded version of his signature black top hat as more angular platforms and dancers moved across the gridiron. The platforms were bearing scores of marching-band musicians who blasted their horns and pounded away on their drums as the Peas went into “Pump It” and blue lights splashed across the production.

Quick streams of fog heralded the arrival of the Peas’ second surprise guest, Usher, who swooped in on a long chain to bust out his will.i.am-assisted joint “OMG.” Rocking a sparkly collar on an otherwise all-white ensemble, the R&B hitmaker cranked out several counts of energetic choreography, enlivening moves from his “OMG” video and at one point jumping over Will and landing in a split.

A spray of pyro ushered in the collective’s breakout 2003 hit “Where Is the Love?” as the oddly shaped platforms spelled out the word “Love” in bright-red letters. The team of dancers, which appeared to have multiplied to over 100, formed hearts across the field as will updated the lyrics of the smash with lines like, “Obama, let’s get these educated.”

Then the group jumped ahead to their most recent single, 2010′s “The Time (Dirty Bit),” as several back up hoofers rocking cubed helmets joined the Peas onstage and dancers lined up along the gridiron to simultaneously bust out the Running Man, a move which drew cheers from the crowd.

The platinum-selling Peas wrapped up the performance with a reprise of “I Gotta Feeling,” as the quartet triumphantly signed off amid of blitz of fog, firepower and flashing lights.

Ripping the halftime show was clearly a touching moment for will, who tweeted beforehand, “Me and apl started the peas when we were 16 yesterday we were dreamin now were livin it. Wow. I’m not crying out of sadness or nervousness its joy and pride and memories and the journey.”

And once the crew left the stage, the frontman was not only proud, but pumped. “That was so freakin sick,” he wrote. “Wow…!!!”

What did you think of the Black Eyed Peas’ Super Bowl performance? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Rockets Up Billboard Charts

Instant-smash single is poised to debut at #1 on Hot 100.
By Gil Kaufman

Who didn’t see this one coming? Thanks to the pushed-up release date on Friday and the most talked-about entrance at Sunday night’s Grammys — not to mention what must have amounted to endless spins at clubs over the weekend — Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is making some chart history.

Billboard reported that after just three days of availability, the tune shot to a record-setting debut on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart at #14 and is poised to possibly debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week thanks to brisk digital sales.

The first single from the album of the same name due on May 23 got 4,602 plays, which gives it the highest detections total by a debuting song in the chart’s 18-year history, representing an audience of 39.3 million. Citing unnamed sources, the magazine also reported that “Born” sold more than 450,000 downloads since its release on Friday morning, which could help the song debut at #1 on the Hot 100 and make it only the 19th song ever to do so on that chart.

Gaga could also potentially wrest a record for the biggest debut track for a woman from Britney Spears if download sales continue to climb. Spears’ “Hold it Against Me” rocked the chart a month ago with 411,000 in sales, but if Gaga’s numbers hold she could land the fourth-largest digital track debut of all time behind Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” (636,000) the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” (465,000) and Flo Rida’s “Low” (460,000).

The star stopped by “Jay Leno” the day after the Grammys, and in addition to explaining that she and Madonna have no beef over complaints by some that “Born This Way” bears too much of a resemblance to some earlier Material Girl hits, Gaga also announced her upcoming May HBO special and explained the inspiration behind her new album.

She also revealed that she changed up the entire look of her Grammy performance two days before it aired because she wasn’t happy with it. “I don’t want the band and dancers to feel like a band and dancers,” Gaga said, explaining why her crew was dressed in flesh-tone vinyl outfits that matched her own.

When Leno made a crack about her trio of Grammy outfits, which included a molded leather bodice created by fashion icon Thierry Mugler, Gaga said the latter had a cosmic inspiration. “It was inspired by humanoids, alien sex humanoid hybrid women,” she said matter of factly, rocking some of the low budget sci-fi alien face-ridged makeup she debuted at the Grammys, on Leno’s show.

The talk show host pointed to her third getup, which she said featured a giant black “church” hat, and asked if maybe it didn’t block the view of the star behind her at the show, actor Will Smith. Gaga promised it didn’t and added that she is in love with his daughter’s hit single. “I love Willow,” gushed Gaga, who took a series of photos with the pre-teen Smith family singer on her lap at the show. “I told her that she inspired me to whip my hair back and forth!”

Though she claimed to have written “Born This Way” in a matter of minutes, Gaga said she spent more than a year perfecting it and tweaking the music, promising that it is just one of the many sounds you’ll hear on the album. “The record is kind of eclectic in a way,” she said. “The rest of the songs on the album are quite different from ‘Born This Way.’ ”

As for the album’s theme, Gaga said it’s about “being able to know that when you were born, you weren’t just born in that moment, you have your entire life to realize the person that you’re potentially going to become and whoever you choose to be was part of your destiny.” Her hope, she said, was to encourage people who are feeling bullied or disenfranchised at the moment to realize that it’s “never too late to harness your inner superstar.”

Lady Gaga Has Her ‘Way’ With Atlantic City

Gaga’s Monster Ball concert in New Jersey on Saturday night included her new #1 single, ‘Born This Way,’ and all her other big hits.
By Vaughn Schoonmaker

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — “I’ve missed you all so much!” Lady Gaga gushed to her little monsters who filled the sold-out Boardwalk Hall arena on Saturday night.

As much as she was missed during her superhumanly brief tour hiatus, the question on everyone’s mind at the Monster Ball was whether or not Gaga would perform “Born This Way.”

Check out photos from Lady Gaga’s Atlantic City Show.

Halfway through her encore performance of “Bad Romance,” Mother Monster took a beat to seductively mutter, “You better not leave when this song is done. There may be a surprise.”

And sure enough, after three minutes of deafening monster screams in the darkness, Miss Gaga stormed the stage once more, surrounded by her dancers, all in the same flesh-colored latex we saw at the Grammys. She belted out her new #1 hit at the top of her lungs and danced with every bit of energy that a normal human would not have after an almost-two-hour gargantuan show.

The second-place award for the wild night’s biggest moment went to the pop star’s announcement that she will be back next year with the “Born This Way Ball,” which — judging from the roar in the venue — is already guaranteed to be sold out a year before tickets even go on sale.

For this concert, Gaga stuck true to her Monster Ball format rather than transition to the material that will appear on her upcoming album, Born This Way. Besides the title track, the only other new song she performed was “You and I,” which she has already played at several shows during her most recent round of touring.

The set list featured all of her biggest hits, including “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” “Telephone” and “Just Dance.” The more intimate piano portion of the show, meanwhile, was noticeably shortened since the singer has dropped her “Fame Monster” rock tune “Speechless.”

Looking as fit as ever, Gaga showed off her toned tummy for most of the second half of the performance, thrusting her body to every beat that could possibly be danced to. Singing loud and strong, Gaga took a moment during “Teeth,” to remind her fans once again that she never does and never will lip synch.

Scissor Sisters opened the concert with six sultry and dance-heavy numbers, including their hit, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’.”

The next stop on the Monster Ball tour is Madison Square Garden in New York City on both Monday and Tuesday, during which Lady Gaga’s first HBO concert special will be taped.

Grammys Give Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Immediate iTunes Bump

Cee Lo, Esperanza Spalding, Lady Antebellum and more also see post-show sales increases.
By Gil Kaufman

It didn’t take long for the big winners at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards to get an iTunes bump. Less than 24 hours after the show, the iTunes singles and albums charts were flooded with songs that were either performed on the show or which won awards during the program.

At press time on Tuesday morning (February 15), the iTunes singles tally was topped, not surprisingly, by Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” which got its televised debut during the show, followed by Dr. Dre’s “I Need a Doctor,” which Eminem and Dre (making his first televised performance in nearly a decade) also performed on the show.

Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” was at #3, followed by Cee Lo Green’s “F— You,” which was one of the most colorful and bizarre live spots in the three-and-a-half-hour show thanks to his outer-space Henson Puppet band and a cameo from a sultry Gwyneth Paltrow.

Mumford & Sons also got some iTunes love after playing on the show with folk legend Bob Dylan, which helped their song “The Cave” hit #5, followed by the night’s big Grammy victors, Lady Antebellum, and their Song and Record of the Year winner, “Need You Now.”

Although she didn’t perform “Firework” on the Grammys, Katy Perry’s anthem hung in at #7, ahead of Rihanna, who had two shots onstage at the Grammys. Her “S&M,” whose video is the subject of legal action, came in at #8, with Bruno Mars‘ “Grenade” and non-Grammy performer Avril Lavigne’s “What the Hell” rounding out the top 10.

Just outside the top 10, there were plenty more Grammy bumps to be found: Cee Lo’s censored “Forget You” (#11), Mumford & Sons’ “Little Lion Man” (#12), Muse’s “Uprising” (#20), Rihanna and Drake’s “What’s My Name?” (#21), Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” (#24) and Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” (#29).

The iTunes album chart told a similar story, with Mumford’s Sigh No More holding on to the #1 slot, followed by Bieber’s Never Say Never remixes disc, Album of the Year winner the Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs was back in play at #3, proceeded by Grammy performers the Avett Brothers’ I and Love and You at #4, with Best New Artist Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society climbing to #6.

Other Grammy album action included: Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now (#7), Bieber’s My World 2.0 (#8), Eminem’s Recovery (#9), Rihanna’s Loud (#10), Florence and the Machine’s Lungs (#11), Bieber’s My Worlds Acoustic (#12), the 2011 Grammy Nominees compilation (#14), as well as albums by the Black Keys (#17), Muse (#19), Bruno Mars (#21) and Spalding’s 2009 Esperanza release (#28).

Andre 3000 Pops Up On Ke$ha’s ‘Sleazy’ Remix

Outkast MC freshens up the pop star’s Cannibal cut with rare feature.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Photo: Michael Buckner/Getty Images

It seems the only way to find spankin’-new Andre 3000 lyrics these days is on the odd remix, and the ATLien definitely picked a left-of-center choice for his latest feature.

On Friday (January 14), a remix of Ke$ha’s Cannibal track “Sleazy” hit the Web, outfitted with some brand-new bars from the elusive Outkast MC. The southern spitter uses the revamp to muse about a young kid dealing with a deadbeat dad over the song’s bouncy thump.

“We start out so cute in our baby pictures/ That mama shot for our daddy so that he wouldn’t forget you/ He forgot anyway, but hey, one day he’ll remember/ If not, he’s human, I’m human, you human, we’ll forgive him,” he spits.

After sounding off about daddy issues, Stacks then rhymes about his playful relationship with the glitter-friendly poptress.

“I call her Keisha, she like it because it’s hood to her/ She call me Andre 6000 because I’m good to her,” he says.

The remix follows a slew of random guest appearances on records by everyone from DJ Unk to Rich Boy as fans await another full-length release from ‘Dre. Back in 2008, the Love Below lyricist broke down his affinity for jumping on the occasional remix to MTV News, explaining that cooking up another quality solo record is no easy task.

“I’ve been doing remixes here and there, and let me tell you, thank God for remixes. I wanna tell everybody who’s been checking out the remixes and things like the John Legend song ['Green Light']: In this day and age, those are the things that have kind of been keeping me alive. Because it takes me awhile to record albums,” he said. “I have to kind of build up something to say.”

What do you think of Andre 3000′s verse on Ke$ha’s “Sleazy” remix? Let us know in the comments!

Usher Gets Sick, Walks Offstage Mid-Show In Berlin

Singer cancels kick off date of European leg of his OMG Tour due to illness.
By Gil Kaufman

Usher was forced to delay the kick off of his European OMG Tour on Wednesday night in Berlin because of illness. In a statement released to fans, the singer apologized for the last-minute scratch, saying he felt he was suffering from a “sinus complication.” Although the gig was rescheduled for Thursday night at the O2 World arena in Berlin, his German fans apparently weren’t appeased by his effort.

“I am truly sorry to all my fans in Berlin who were inconvenienced by tonight’s postponement of the show,” the singer said in a statement about Wednesday’s aborted concert. “I was ill and felt that I would not have been able to give them the show that they properly deserve. … I am looking forward to performing tomorrow and giving Berliners a great show.”

According to the statement, the singer received treatment from doctors for a sinus issue that affected his balance, but a visibly still-ailing Usher was unable to finish the Thursday make-up show, reportedly abandoning the stage after just five songs.

On Friday (January 14), a follow-up statement from his spokesperson confirmed that he was too ill to play Thursday night’s Berlin date and has been forced to reschedule the next three dates on the tour as well. The Rotterdam show originally scheduled for this week has been moved to March 1 and a show in Antwerp, also slated for this week, has been bumped to March 7.

The statement also updated the singer’s condition: “Usher is suffering from upper respiratory illness, which is currently preventing him from performing a proper show. After consultation with doctors, he has been advised to reschedule the upcoming dates in order to get the rest he needs to ensure a complete recovery.”

Footage posted on YouTube that was purportedly taken at the make-up performance in Berlin shows Usher standing silently at the microphone seemingly unable to sing, with fans booing him at first and then chanting, “Usher, Usher,” as he approaches the microphone and apologizes to them for his struggles. “I appreciate your support,” he told the fans wearily.

“I have been very excited about my European Tour and I deeply regret having to reschedule the shows,” the singer said in the new statement. “I am truly sorry for any inconvenience I have caused my fans. My fans are the best in the world and I am looking forward to getting better so that I can give them the show they deserve.”

Usher wrapped up the North American leg of his tour in December and his overseas dates are slated to last through the spring.

What do you think of the fans’ reaction to Usher’s walking offstage mid-show? Tell us in the comments.

Justin Bieber Abortion Quotes Explained By Rolling Stone Writer

Bieber’s quotes about rape and abortion continue to stir up controversy.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Terry Richardson/ Wenner Media

The new issue of Rolling Stone magazine raised eyebrows for a number of reasons. Not only does it feature a cover image of teen dream Justin Bieber with his signature mop top teased up into spikes, but the accompanying interview has the controversy-shy 16-year-old “Never Say Never” singer weighing in on a number of contentious topics, including abortion.

When RollingStone.com posted excerpts from the cover story on Tuesday, it initially left out a key phrase that is included in the print edition of the mag that slightly misrepresented Bieber’s feelings on sex, pregnancy and abortion.

In the article, the writer states that Bieber is “definitely” against abortion, quoting him as saying, “I really don’t believe in abortion. … I think [an embryo] is a human. It’s like killing a baby.” When the writer asks if that also refers to incidents of rape, Bieber replies, “Um … well I think that’s just really sad. …”

By Wednesday, the site added this explanation: “Due to an editing error, this rollingstone.com news item originally included an incomplete quote from our Justin Bieber cover story. The actual quote, which appears in full in the March 3 print edition of Rolling Stone, reads: ‘Um. Well, I think that’s really sad [referring to abortion], but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.’ For the record: Bieber was quoted correctly by writer Vanessa Grigoriadis in her feature.”

The original version of the quote that appeared online did not contain the phrase “I don’t know how that would be a reason.”

Grigoriadis spoke to Popeater.com on Thursday about the backlash against Bieber’s quotes about rape, which the story seemed to imply he thinks “happens for a reason.”

“I think he meant that God has a plan,” the writer told the site. “Even for the most die-hard Christian, it’s hard to justify rape as part of God’s plan, and harder to justify rape that leads to pregnancy and abortion. I think he was wrestling with that in his answer, which I found to be solid and logical. I think it is being widely misunderstood. He did not say that rape was part of God’s plan.”

Asked whether Bieber was mature for his age, Grigoriadis agreed with something Bieber’s manager said about his famous client. “Scooter Braun was right when he said to me that Justin sometimes seems like a 16-year-old going on 14 and other times like a 16-year-old going on 32,” she said, adding that she thought it was fair game to ask the singer about such topics as premarital sex, abortion and politics because of the cultural impact Bieber has had in his short time in the public eye.

“I think that anyone who has as much sway in popular culture as Justin should be asked all questions,” she said. “I agree that he does not bring up these issues in his work at the moment, but it’s possible that he will in the future, as he decides that he wants the public to know more about him.”

Do you think Justin Bieber’s views on serious issues like abortion and sex matter? Sound off in the comments!

Lady Gaga Previews Born This Way Tracks

Rolling Stone heard four new songs, which seem to draw from the past while still pushing the envelope.
By MTV News Staff Report

Hours before reviving her long-running Monster Ball Tour in Atlantic City, New Jersey, recently, Lady Gaga gave Rolling Stone magazine a sneak peek at four songs off her upcoming Born This Way album … and from the sound of things, she’s not only pushing the boundaries, she’s borrowing from some of the best in the business.

For example, E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who lends his prodigious skronk to a pair of the songs — “Edge of Glory” and “Hair” — or Nine Inch Nails, circa Trent Reznor’s Broken era (on “Hair,” which also apparently draws inspiration from ’80s singer Pat Benatar’s “We Belong” and the inspirational, all-encompassing lyrics of LG’s own “Born This Way”). Another song, “Judas,” which is set to be the second single off Born This Way, is described by Rolling Stone writer Matthew Perpetua as “a classic Lady Gaga pop banger,” with a “thumping, house music breakdown” and a vocal hook “that borrows a bit of Rihanna’s distinctive cadence.”

“Edge” is “a massive power ballad with heavy club beats” that also contains “an element of cheesiness” and an “Eighties stadium rock vibe.” “Scheiée” — a remix of which Gaga actually debuted last month at a fashion show in Paris — contains flavors of ’90s dance hits by the likes of C&C Music Factory, Snap! and RuPaul, and a chorus that “vaguely” recalls Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.” And “Hair” features LG proudly proclaiming “I am my hair!” for reasons unknown.

On Friday, Gaga’s “Born This Way” officially became the fastest-selling song in iTunes history, having blown past the million-download mark in just five days. The song is also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and sits atop the charts in 23 different countries. The video is reportedly set to premiere this week.

Gaga’s Born This Way album is due May 23.

Beyonce To Star In Clint Eastwood’s ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake

Movie will be directed and produced by the Oscar winner.

Beyoncé Knowles is headed back to the big screen and into the familiar territory of playing an aspiring singer-turned-superstar. According to Deadline, Knowles will star in a remake of “A Star Is Born,” to be directed and produced by Oscar winner Clint Eastwood for Warner Bros.

The remake will be the fourth telling of the “A Star Is Born” tale, the most memorable in recent years being the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as star-crossed lovers of sorts. It is also worth mentioning that the producers of that film, Billy Gerber and Jon Peters, are also attached to this new project. It is said to be a full-on musical with production set to begin sometime in the fall.

Naturally, the plot details are under wraps, but the original story revolves around an aspiring singer who meets and falls in love with a troubled, failing former star who helps get the young ingénue her big break in the business.

No announcements have been made with regard to the male lead, but the report mentioned that major names like Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Hamm have been floated around.

It’s definitely an interesting step for Knowles but not necessarily a surprise, given the fact that the majority of her film roles have been as singers (“Cadillac Records,” “Dreamgirls,” “The Fighting Temptations”). While many thought “Dreamgirls” would bring awards recognition for Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson’s supporting role ended up garnering the most attention. With Oscar fave Eastwood at the helm of this new project, Knowles could be in line for some hardware yet.

After watching “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” did you leave the theater thinking there was even more Justin Bieber film footage that you wanted to see? Well, your wish has been granted. A new version of the movie, dubbed “Director’s Fan Cut,” is about to hit theaters this week for an exclusive one-week run.

The extended version will hit theaters on Friday. According to a press release, it will include “more of Justin’s friends and hometown life, new songs and performances, and special footage shot at fan premieres across the country.”

“I realized I had an embarrassment of riches when I was I in the cutting room,” director Jon Chu said in a statement. “This cut allows me to retain some of the best scenes from the original movie, while incorporating previously unseen footage and new material I shot during our extensive promotional tour on behalf of the movie. Justin’s dedication to his fanbase is unwavering and I was inspired as a filmmaker to attempt to provide them a unique experience that showed even more of his world.”

The film originally opened on February 11 and features a behind-the-scenes look into the rise of Bieber’s career. It also includes concert footage shot at various shows during his tour, including his stop at Madison Square Garden last summer.

“It is a testament to the professionalism and tenacity of Jon and the production team for turning around this new version of ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ director’s fan cut in only a few months,” Adam Goodman, President Paramount Film Group said. “Giving fans an even deeper look into Justin’s life.” (MTV’s parent company, Viacom, also owns Paramount.)

Grammys Give Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Immediate iTunes Bump

Cee Lo, Esperanza Spalding, Lady Antebellum and more also see post-show sales increases.

J. Cole, Wale NBA All-Star Weekend Show Features Drake, Melanie Fiona

NBA All-Star Weekend is officially under way in Los Angeles, and Wale and J. Cole helped to kick it off with a sold-out show at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on Friday night. The Roc Nation duo treated their fans, who had braved the uncharacteristically cold and damp Southern California weather, with an amazing performance as well as a surprise guest.

Drake hit the stage during J. Cole’s set to perform their salacious smash hit “In the Morning.” The crowd erupted as soon as the track began to play, but it got even louder once Drake hit the stage to seduce nearly every young lady in attendance with his romantic style.

“Baby, you wintertime cold/ The night is still young, drink that dinner wine slow/ I’m trying to make the goose bumps on your inner thigh show.”

J. Cole and Drake released the video for the track this past week on Valentine’s Day. It features behind-the-scenes footage from their Paris stop on Drake’s Lights, Dreams and Nightmares European tour. When MTV News caught up with Cole before the show, he said that video was meant to be something really organic, even though it’s becoming something much bigger.

“It was really a viral video. At the end of the day, it wasn’t supposed to be a Hype Williams production or nothing. I wanted it to be really organic, just to document the tour. Just to document that moment in my life, or our lives, touring Europe for the first time.”

Cole said this was his first All-Star weekend, and he loved the energy it brought to the town. He has been in L.A. for two weeks now, since the Grammy Awards as well as working on his project with Kendrick Lamar. He said he hopes to play in the All-Star celebrity game next year to fulfill his hoop dreams.

Another Canadian singer hopped on the stage as well. Fellow Roc Nation artist Melanie Fiona joined Cole and Wale onstage for their first-ever performance of Wale’s “Beautiful Bliss.”

Wale opened his show with his usual vigor. During his set, which included tracks from his More About Nothing mixtape and Attention Deficit, the crowd roared once his collaboration with Waka Flocka and Roscoe Dash came on. But by that time, he had already cleared a space for himself to dance and shake his dreads as the crowd helped him rap. As far as he was concerned, it was business as usual, making sure the crowd had an amazing time.

“We’re used to this now. We’ve done a lot of sold-out shows together. I just think the significance of this is it being All-Star weekend,” Wale said. “I think being a quote-unquote ‘real’ hip-hop show, that’s what makes it special.”
